Florida Coral Snake

Gopher

Great day not to have my camera, leaving my work-site today on an old dirt road shooting across it a Coral Snake. He (can’t really vouch for his sex, had no interest in picking him up to check) but for the good of the blog I’m referring to the Coral Snake. He was about 28″ long and about 3/4 of a inch thick at his widest point. Thought at first it was a King Snake, got out with my good friend and walked along side of it for a while, definitely Coral Snake. The old saying goes “red and yellow kill a fellow, red and black friend of Jack”. Just found out that the adage above is only reliable for North American species. Another reason why it is great to live in the US.

He showed no interest in us as he went under the shade of a tree than headed for some brush. If he was to bite, the symptoms would not be felt for 8-24 hours. So if you are going to get bit, you need to remember because that will explain your slurred speech the next day, maybe write it down on a note of paper and keep it in your wallet.
