Guess the Scat Trifecta

It is time for another Guess The…..Contest.   During the last year we have had a Guess The Plant Contest, Guess The Bug Contest, Guess The Frog Contest, and Guess The Bone Contest.  So this time it is Guess the Scat, aka, dung, droppings, fecal matter, carbon contributors, etc…

These pictures of Scat were shot on the Florida Trail in the Corbett Wildlife Refuge , and the Dupuis Management Area.

Both sites are continuous and make up 25 miles of Florida Trail.  The hike can be done in 2 days and should only be done during very dry conditions as the Corbett area is pretty wet during the rainy part of the year.

This part of Florida Trail will take you through dense cypress heads, pine flats, and few oak hammocks.   On the trail walk you can lock eyes with 12ft plus alligators and hear the snorts of a white tail deer before it leaps thru palmetto paths.  The great horned owl lectures the forest at night while the  whip-poor-will incessantly interrupts the owls sermon making it impossible to sleep. Staying up all night,  you can expect to see stars on top of stars and constellations you would of only seen in a book but now pierce you ancient memory from many souls before and you say to yourself this is where I belong.

For this Guess the Scat Trifecta you must accurately identify the scat of all three mammals.  For your correct guess OSR will send you a free used (recycled copy) of My First Summer in the Sierra by John Muir.

John Muir takes you on his walk through the Sierras describing huge trees, the Yosemite Valley,  cloud cover and his many meals of mutton.

A peek into the book, John Muir writes on page 155. “An eagle soaring above a sheer cliff, where I suppose its nest is, makes another striking show of life, and helps to bring to mind of the other people of the so-called solitude–deer in the forest

caring for their young; well-fed bears; the lively throng of squirrels; the blessed birds, great and small, stirring and sweetening the groves; and the clouds of happy insects filling the sky with joyous hum as part and parcel of the down pouring sunshine.

Good luck with Guess The Scat, the first person to comment with the correct three mammals responsible for their respective scat is the winner.
