National Estuaries Day: This Saturday September 27, 2008

If you live in Palm Beach County, Martin County or Indian River County, this is a great weekend to take your kids out to Shepard Park in Stuart where there will be a rally to draw attention to fresh water discharges from lake Okeechobee into the Saint Lucie River.  After the rally there will be lots for the kids to do at the Florida Oceanic Coastal Center on Hutchinson Island from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm: see below and click on National Estuaries Day Events.

SAVE OUR RIVER RALLY

Join Florida Oceanographic Society and the Rivers Coalition on National Estuaries Day, Saturday, September 27, 2008, 8:30-10:00 am, at Shepard Park, US 1 and West Ocean Blvd. in Stuart.

The purpose of the Rally is to raise awareness and support about the impacts to our coastal estuaries

(the St. Lucie River and the Indian River Lagoon) caused by the freshwater discharges from Lake Okeechobee. Florida Oceanographic’s mission is to inspire environmental stewardship for coastal ecosystems through education and research. The rally will draw attention of public and political leaders on the freshwater discharge issue, specifically about stopping the pollution to our coastal ecosystems. Mark Perry, Executive Director, Florida Oceanographic, and Karl Wickstrom, Rivers Coalition, and Founder/Editor-in-Chief, Florida Sportsman Magazine, will be among the speakers at the event.

The Rally is also an opportunity to empower the people to send letters to the political leaders, joining thousands of others in the effort to stop pollution of the estuaries.

Following the Rally, Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center, 890 NE Ocean Blvd, Hutchinson Island, Stuart, will host special programs for National Estuaries Day. In addition to regular Coastal Center programs, there will be seining (bring closed-toe water shoes), games, crafts, and presentations from 10:00 am-5:00 pm.
