Jeff W. a frequent visitor to OSR mentioned that he is planting Slash Pine Tree Seedlings along his fence line and wanted to know how fast they will grow.
Jeff, it just so happens that 250 acres of Slash Pine Seedlings were planted last January in a restoration project, not far from your planting site, and they now stand between 24″-26″in height. This picture was taken this afternoon (9-17-08). They have done this on their own with no irrigation and as you can see in the picture, heavily competing with aggressive grasses and broadleaf plants. On average a Slash Pine will put on between 2-3 feet a year.
Thanks Jeff, happy planting, I think I’m busy that day.

Thanks for the feedback Bart!! I appeciate the info. I am alwyas looking for ways to use native vegetation within my lanscape. Not only do Slash pines add to the beauty but the old pine needles serve as an excellent ground covering and weedblack without adding to the contamination of our soils with the use of dyed mulches. Sure I can’t convince you to stop by on the day of my planting!!LOL
Jeff, I have on occasion been lured with food and an afternoon of fishing. Good point on using the pine needles for mulch.
