Whitetail deer waterfront dining

I have seen Whitetail deer chomp on Swamp lily , (crinum americanum) especially when water levels get low and they can move into new areas. Tracking whitetail in single feeding areas can be a rush especially when they walk behind you and you catch them out of the corner of your eye.

One day I was sitting still watching a snail kite fly up and down a grassy flat. About 500 yards in a tree stand I noticed about 100 plus blackbirds disperse. When you see a movement like that you just know something is going on in those trees. About 4 minutes after that two does walked quietly behind me to their feeding area.

Water Lily , (Nynphaea Odorata) and Water Shield , (Brasenia Schreberi) are also favorites of the whitetail. In Northern States the whitetail is coaxed into deeper water by water shield. The water shield is a floating-leaved plant, with long leaf stalks with creeping roots anchored in the mud. The plant prefers water up to 6ft deep. In the early summer, like the moose and loon, whitetails swim into deep waters to feed on the water shield . One theory why the whitetail feed on the water shield is to make up for lost sodium in the spring or summer.

Remember to take some time and “smell the aquatics” as you track whitetail; you might pick up a new tracking area and see some colorful flowers to boot.
